Capt. Robert Kalamaras has been selected as the new police chief of the Fairfield Police Department, replacing Chief Christopher Lyddy, who is retiring on Friday, Jan. 22, after 38 years with the department.

"I am very excited to be selected as the next chief of police," Kalamaras said after his recommendation was announced. "I could not have done it without the support of my fellow officers, and the leadership and mentorship of Chief Chris Lyddy."

Kalamaras, who was selected on Tuesday, Jan. 19, by the Police Commission, started his career with the department as a patrol officer and continued a steady rise through the ranks including working in emergency services, crash investigations, and public relations.

He currently runs the Special Services Section.

Fairfield First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick will swear in Kalamaras during a special ceremony on Friday, Jan. 22.

The Fairfield Police Department has invited the public to watch the swearing-in ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Friday, on Facebook.
